One thing that a short narrative can teach us is moral principles that we can implement in our daily lives. Because of the lessons they may teach us, short stories can even influence our perspective on life. Sinigang by Marie Aubrey Villaceran taught me a variety of values that I can apply in my daily life. This story taught me a lot, particularly about families.
Husbands commit adultery on a regular basis in the Philippines, but it is not a frequent occurrence. Why should we call adultery ordinary when it is never a good thing to do? Apart from the personal delight of the one who committed adultery, it would never benefit us. Men and women are both men and women. We are all human beings who make mistakes, but the difference is that we have the ability to choose and are taught simple lessons such as avoiding cheating. We all have a mind of our own, and we all know what is right and wrong. We can never say, "Hindi ko sinasadya," because adultery is a choice. Every action that we take has repercussions. Adultery can drive families apart and have little impact on children; it can destroy trust and cause emotional instability and strong emotions in the person who has been betrayed. Men and women are not saints, but we must remember that we each have the ability to make our own decisions and that we must consider other individuals and factors before making a decision.
These are the lessons I gained from "Sinigang," a fantastic short novella. It will teach every readers the value of having a firm foundation amongst family members, respecting, being strong, apologizing, and forgiving, especially to Filipino families who are going through the same problem as the narrative.
The first lesson I took up from this narrative was to be loyal to your relationship. Even if I am in a romantic relationship, I can use this lesson in the future, especially if I decide to start a family. The consequences of having an extramarital affair with another man or woman are depicted in the story. It has the potential to erode trust, damage a relationship, cause emotional distress, and produce family problems that will have a significant impact on the children. I know how it feels to be in a family dealing with a problem similar to the one described in the story. Those repercussions occurred in our family, which is why I can identify to the narrative so well. I even made a pledge to myself not to commit adultery since I know how it feels to be a victim. You must be certain of the person you choose to marry in order for your marriage to succeed despite any other issues that may arise.
The second lesson I took away from this story was apologizing and learning from your mistakes. Liza had been waiting for her father to say "I'm sorry," and now she has. We must be sincere in our regret and resolve to never do such a thing again. You've already done it and are aware of the consequences, so don't do it again. I'll never be able to avoid making mistakes, therefore I should apologize truly so that he or she understands that I didn't mean it. I'll also think twice before doing something like this so that I don't make a mistake that could harm others.
Giving respect, especially to elders, and being obedient are the third lessons I took away from the narrative. Many Filipino traditions are highlighted in the novel, one of which is elder respect. In the beginning of the story, Liza still respected her aunt. She answered all of her aunt's inquiries, despite her dislike of talking about her experience at the wake. Despite her strained connection and resentment with her father, Liza admired and revered him. Because of her father's request, she even followed her mother to the wake of her half-brother, demonstrating her obedience. Liza's admiration for Sylvia is another thing I've seen. Her emotions were unstable when she met the woman, but she didn't stoop to shouting and disrespecting her. For that, I admired her. These two teachings inspired me to continue to be polite to everyone, regardless of their age, status, gender, or other characteristics, and to be obedient as long as the activity does not endanger anyone.
Another lesson I gained from this experience is the importance of remaining strong and collected in the face of adversity. We all know Liza is a daddy's girl, and she was heartbroken when she found out her father had cheated on her, but she grew strong in dealing with her family's troubles. Even though she had grudges towards her father, she did not lash out at him. Even though she was hurt, she never gave up on her difficulties. Perhaps being rebellious is a method for her to de-stress and unwind from her family's troubles. She is, in my opinion, a strong, independent woman, which I admire. She kept her cool when she met Sylvia since she dislikes conflicts and clashes.
The most recent lesson I learned is linked to the preceding one. It is forgiving and forward-thinking. It's as though we're liberating ourselves through forgiving. It's about letting go of bad feelings and emotions toward other individuals. It takes time to forgive, but the lesson it taught us should never be forgotten. We can gradually reconstruct what has been lost and learn to tolerate someone who has made a mistake. Just like Liza, who learnt to forgive her father and create new memories with him, indicating that her love for him has not faded. Yes, there will be scars, but we must remember that life is not all rainbows and daisies. This is the reality: even the kindest man you've ever met may make mistakes. To be free, we need to let go of our grudges. This lesson taught me to forgive and let go of any grudges I had against others. I, too, desire peace of mind, so I chose to forgive my father and provide peace to his soul.
As my friend evaluate my work using the rubric this is the results of her evaluation.
